Kiribati government promises to work with seafarers? union on climate change

The Kiribati government has pledged to work with seafarers? unionists in an effort to tackle the impact of climate change in the Pacific region.

Government representatives made the promise at the first ITF workshop on climate change in the region, which took place from 6-8 September in Kiribati. Also attending the seminar were seafarers from the ITF-affiliated Kiribati Islands Overseas Seafarers? Union (KIOSU), the Fiji Maritime Workers? Association and the Tuvalu Overseas Seafarers? Union as well as representatives from an environmental campaigning group.

Opened by Pinto Katia, Kiribati minister of commerce, Mark Davis, ITF Asia Pacific deputy regional secretary and Ioteba Tekee, KIOSU general secretary, the workshop focused on the causes and global impact of climate change, responses to the issue and the ITF work programme.

During the event, the Kiribati government representatives agreed to work with the KIOSU on climate change issues; an island nation consisting of 33 low lying atolls, Kiribati is particularly vulnerable to rising sea levels, while seafarers make a key contribution towards the economy of the state. The government, they said, would continue to deliver training on climate change and would involve the union?s members in adaptation initiatives and consultation on climate change. In addition, it would improve communication and work more collaboratively with both non-governmental agencies and the KIOSU.

Workshop participants also drafted an action plan for the KIOSU and agreed to establish a climate change task force, which would meet with core partners, including government, to further the work.

Well, we?re all done with modern poetry.? I?ve exhausted every conceivable topic, every possible technique.? There?s nothing left to talk about.? Just go back through my previous columns and you?ll know everything there is to know about writing modern poetry.

Did I have you going for a second?

The fact is, there is no end to the invention, the creativity, and the variety of modern poetry and approaches to modern poetry. Think of how many stylistic genres and individual styles there are in modern painting, to name just one medium.? Think for just a moment about the unique visions of Monet, Mondrian, Matisse, Miro, Grandma Moses, and M.C. Escher.

As I?ve said, and tried to demonstrate, poetry is much more than sentiment, short lines, and end rhymes.? The techniques that can be used to communicate the very special, intimate truth that lives in the poetic imagination are as rich and variegated as the colors in the artist?s palette, or the harmonic colors in the music composer?s palette. We've looked at many of them, one by one.

Now I?m inviting you to go wild.? Let loose.? Be creative.? Pull out all the stops.? Put all the leftovers into the stew.? Throw the paint onto the wall.? Play the piano without the music?with your fists, even.

Today we?re going to look at Abstract Poetry and its close cousin, Cubist Poetry.

Abstract poetry is:

1. intended to convey emotion rather than a moment in time, event, story or descriptive scene. Some might view it as nonsense.
2. constructed at the discretion of the poet in length, stanza, meter and or rhyme.
3. primarily attempting to communicate through sound and bizarre images.

For the purpose of this article, we will just treat Cubist poetry as a variety or subset of Abstract poetry, and not belabor the distinction between the two genres any further than that.

Write an abstract poem.

Suggestions:

Start with automatic writing. Get a pencil and paper and write down whatever goes through your head without thinking about it or filtering it or judging it.? In a previous phase of my writing life, many of my poems began with automatic writing.? When you?ve done that for a few minutes, you may find the poem flowing out of you, or you may find you have written the poem already.

Start with an abstraction. Write a poem about that abstraction.? Use surreal, unrelated images, use the sound of the words, but do not use images conventionally associated with that abstraction, and don?t worry about grammar or syntax.? Example:? Spring?evoke the emotions of spring without using flowers, birds, rain, etc.

More examples of abstractions: heat, betrayal, light, sacrifice, speed, dissonance, giddiness, recklessness, thirst, anger, transcendence, achievement, time, work, blue.

Find an abstract painting.? Picasso, Miro, Mondrian, Chagall, Pollack, that sort of thing.? Write a poem evoking the sense and feeling inspired by the painting, without referring to the painting or its visual elements in a literal fashion.

Hard drive shipments recover from floods in Thailand, expected to reach record high

Last year's floods in Thailand caused hard drive shortages after wreaking havoc on a number of electronics manufacturers, but new stats from IHS iSuppli indicate that the HDD market for PCs has fully recovered and is poised to hit an all time high. The firm expects 524 million units for internal use in PCs to ship this year, besting the previous record by 4.3 percent. What's giving the recovery an added boost? According to the analytics group, the extra demand comes courtesy of Windows 8 and Ultrabooks. Unfortunately for deal hounds, the company noted in a report earlier this year that prices aren't expected to dip below the pre-flood range until 2014. If IHS iSuppli projections hold true, total annual hard drive shipments could reach 575.1 million by 2016.

Steve Jobs added Google Maps to the original iPhone just weeks before unveiling

The controversy Apple has faced with its new Maps app has left many users pining for the days when the company and Google were close allies. Such was the case in January 2007 when Steve Jobs unveiled the original iPhone. In an era preceding the lucrative App Store and third-party iOS apps, Apple had chosen Google as a key partner for both Maps and search. Yet it almost didn't turn out that way. According to the New York Times, the inclusion of Google Maps on iPhone had been an eleventh-hour decision by Steve Jobs ? the late Apple co-founder believed it would make for a good demonstration of the device's multitouch technology. And indeed it did. Jobs even used the new Maps app to prank Starbucks, drawing some of the biggest laughs during his now-iconic Macworld keynote.

Google Maps on iPhone almost didn't happen

But citing a former iPhone engineer, the Times reveals that Maps had never been part of the original plan and the on-stage demo Jobs gave was the result of three weeks of feverish work by two employees. Apple then "hastily" arranged a deal with Google to incorporate the company's mapping data. The alliance made sense at the time: Android was but a blip on the mobile industry's radar and Google CEO Eric Schmidt had a seat on Apple's board. Given the benefit of hindsight, many have since criticized the Schmidt appointment, with Daring Fireball's John Gruber calling it "the single biggest mistake in Jobs?s entire time at the helm."

Conflicts of interest aside, Apple likely wouldn't have been able to tackle maps on its own ? at least not in 2007. On stage with Walt Mossberg and Kara Swisher of AllThingsD, Jobs didn't hide the fact his company was in unfamiliar territory. "We don't know how to do maps on the backend," he said. "We know how to do the best maps client in the world, but we don't know how to make the backend. So we partner with people who know how to do the backend."

Google would serve as that partner until earlier this year when Apple abruptly reneged on the agreement and pursued its own mapping project. By now we're well familiar with the aftermath of that decision, but it's interesting to hear how close the original iPhone came to shipping with no Maps at all.

COMMUNICATION IS A TOP CONCERN FOR TEACHERS AND PARENTS
Advisory Committees Provide Feedback to State Superintendent on Louisiana Believes

BATON ROUGE, La. ? Parents and teachers urged State Superintendent of Education John White to step up communications on the importance and impact of major changes in the classroom. The feedback came from advisory committees convened to identify challenges to implementing Louisiana Believes, the state?s plan for continued improvement in education. During September, White met with more than 100 members of the four advisory committees, which represent teachers, principals, superintendents and families and communities across the state, to define strategies to support Common Core State Standards and Compass.

?Parents need to be more aware of the big changes that are happening in the classroom,? said Christy Cormier, a member of the Louisiana Believes Parent Advisory Committee. ?The new academic standards are much tougher and our kids will be expected to perform at a much higher level than ever before ? starting this year. I look forward to the day when Louisiana Believes is more than a plan.? As a parent of a 4th grade student who has a developmental disability, believing is the cornerstone to her education and success in life.? Knowing that each Louisiana Believes committee member is committing to believing in our children, our families and educators gives me great hope for my daughter?s future.?

Starting this year, the writing assessment will align to the Common Core State Standards, which are rigorous, internationally-benchmarked academic standards adopted by Louisiana in 2010. Under the old assessment, students were asked to write an essay about a personal experience or opinion. Under the new assessment, students will be asked to read and respond to a passage, which measures their ability to develop and defend a line of reasoning based on their understanding of content.

?We need to up our game. When you raise academic standards for students, you raise the bar for teachers as well,? said White. ?Compass provides a process to give constructive feedback so teachers can continually improve their classroom instruction.?

Compass is the state?s new teacher evaluation system, which, for the first time, will evaluate teachers in part on student learning. Half of a teacher?s evaluation will be based on how much a student learned from one year to the next, and half of the evaluation will be based on observations by principals and administrators.

Issues raised by superintendents and principals underscore the importance of providing clear communication. Explaining the shift to Common Core State Standards, determining how to elevate teacher leadership, and placing a strong emphasis on pre-K education were issues raised by school leaders.

The Teacher Advisory Committee formed workgroups to develop strategies to improve communication between the state and educators and to develop recommendations, tools and processes for helping teachers implement Common Core State Standards. One of those groups, the Teacher Communication Workgroup, will provide invaluable feedback on components of the Department?s website, newsletters, and communication to teachers in the classroom. Teachers and members of the Family/Community Advisory Committee stressed the need for parent-friendly information about the instructional shifts taking place in the classroom and the importance of new teacher evaluations and performance measures. A work group formed by the Community Advisory Committee will focus on providing feedback on the best practices in communicating community-led change with parents and implementation around at-risk students.

Membership on Louisiana Believes advisory committees is voluntarily. Interested participants submitted letters of interest to the Department and were selected based on their diverse professional backgrounds and geographic representation, as well as recommendations from educators and community groups. The four Louisiana Believes advisory committees are scheduled to meet quarterly.

The next Louisiana Believes Teacher and Parent/Community Advisory Committee meetings will be held in early January. A tentative schedule, which is subject to change, is below:

NEW YORK (AP) ? The Big Apple is getting another "biggest": the world's tallest Ferris wheel, part of an ambitious plan to draw New Yorkers and tourists alike to the city's so-called "forgotten borough."

The 625-foot-tall, $230 million New York Wheel is to grace a spot in Staten Island overlooking the Statue of Liberty and the downtown Manhattan skyline, offering a singular view as it sweeps higher than other big wheels like the Singapore Flyer, the London Eye, and a "High Roller" planned for Las Vegas.

Designed to carry 1,440 passengers at a time, it's expected to draw 4.5 million people a year to a setting that also would include a 100-shop outlet mall and a 200-room hotel.

It will be "an attraction unlike any other in New York City ? in fact, it will be, we think, unlike any other on the planet," Mayor Michael Bloomberg said as he unveiled the plans against the backdrop of New York Harbor. While the privately financed project faces various reviews, officials hope to have the wheel turning by the end of 2015.

The wheel would put Staten Island on the map of superlatives in a place where "biggest" is almost an expectation ? home to the nation's biggest city population, busiest mass-transit system, even the biggest Applebee's restaurant.

The attraction stands to change the profile of the least populous and most remote of the city's five boroughs, a sometime municipal underdog that has taken insults from New Jersey and was once known for having the world's largest ... landfill.

"It's going to be a real icon. The Ferris wheel will be Staten Island's Eiffel Tower," Sen. Charles Schumer enthused.

As a visible addition to the skyline around the harbor, the wheel "gives Staten Island an identity beyond its role as a suburban community," while letting it tap into the stream of tourist money in a city that drew 50.9 million visitors last year, said Mitchell Moss, a New York University urban policy professor.

The project is expected to bring $500 million in private investment and 1,100 permanent jobs to the borough's St. George waterfront, and the developers will pay the city $2.5 million a year in rent for the land.

Staten Island isn't entirely off the tourist map. Its free ferry is the city's third-largest tourist attraction, carrying an estimated 2 million visitors a year alongside millions of residents, officials say.

But the city has long struggled to entice tourists off the boat and into Staten Island. Much-touted Staten Island sightseeing bus tours fizzled within a year in 2009 for lack of ridership.

Australian tourists Leah Field and Adam Lica, for example, were riding the ferry Thursday for its views of the Statue of Liberty. They thought they might have lunch on the Staten Island side but weren't planning to explore further.

"We weren't sure what there is to do there," explained Lica, 32, of Melbourne. But were there a giant Ferris wheel, the couple likely would go ride it, he said.

But Henriette Repmann, a German university student, said she wouldn't bother.

"You don't have to have the biggest Ferris wheel in the world to get a good view of New York," Repmann, 20, of Leipzig, said Thursday as she visited the Empire State Building.

Largely a bedroom community for other parts of the city, Staten Island boasts about 470,000 residents and a minor league ballpark, cultural sites and quirky attractions, from locations in the video for Madonna's "Papa Don't Preach" to the Staten Island Zoo, home to New York's answer to Pennsylvania's prognosticating groundhog. The Staten Island rodent bears the dubious distinction of having once bitten Bloomberg.

But Staten Island, the only one of the city's five boroughs not accessible by subway, tends to get overshadowed by its bigger neighbors, so much so that some have at times suggested it secede from the city.

And residents often bristle at an image shaped by such television shows as "Mob Wives" and "Big Ang" ? and by a former New Jersey beach town mayor who portrayed Staten Islanders in a blog post as heavy on hairspray and light on class. (The ex-mayor, Ken Pringle of Belmar, visited Staten Island in 2008 to make amends.)

Resident Miatta Bryant also thinks the wheel might bring the borough more respect.

"People always say Staten Island is so boring," the 26-year-old certified nursing assistant said.

The Ferris wheel, state Assemblyman Matthew Titone hopes, will show the world a different Staten Island than the one they see on TV.

"They will see our cultural institutions and will see that we are not idiots," he said. "Shirtless, musclebound idiots."

The humble salad spinner is great for washing leaves of lettuce without bruising them, but according to Busty Girl Comics, a blog that chronicles the issues that come with being large-chested, it's also a great tool for cleaning bras that can easily get mangled in the washing machine.

Anyone who's shopped for bras or shopped for bras for a partner knows that those things can get pretty expensive, so it makes sense to take care of them so they'll last as long as possible. Apparently, all you need for a gentle wash is soap made for delicate items, like lingerie soap or baby shampoo, some warm water, and a salad spinner dedicated to the task. You can probably figure out the rest, but according to the reaction at Tumblr, it works like a charm, and other hand-wash delicates clean up nicely in a salad spinner as well. You can also pick up fabric bags to protect your delicates in the wash, but we can appreciate the ingenuity of this tip.

The Obesity Epidemic Spawns Another Health Risk: Cancer

It?s no secret that there?s an obesity epidemic in America. But the side effects from being overweight, including cancer risks, continue to multiply.

Early treatment of prostate cancer, one of the most common cancers in men, is usually very successful. But?ScienceDaily?reports today that, "obesity increases the risk of aggressive prostate disease. New research, published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Medicine, finds that the fat surrounding the prostate of overweight or obese men with prostate cancer provides a favorable environment to promote cancer growth.?

While they note that fat ?is a major player in the immune system, which protects the body from infection and disease,? the bad news is that ?too much fat can cause these systems to go haywire and can increase the risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer.?

And this new research shows that, ?Regardless of type of prostate disease the overweight men had different levels of gene activity in the fat surrounding their prostates compared to the lean men.?

To put things in perspective, the National Cancer Institute?says that in ?One study, using NCI Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results data, estimated that in 2007 in the United States, about 34,000 new cases of cancer in men (4 percent) and 50,500 in women (7 percent) were due to obesity. The percentage of cases attributed to obesity varied widely for different cancer types but was as high as 40 percent for some cancers, particularly endometrial cancer and esophageal adenocarcinoma.?

Earlier this year, the journal Science observed, ?Insulin and a related hormone known as insulin-like growth factor (IGF) are now at the center of a growing wave of research around the world aimed at elucidating what many scientists consider to be their critical role in fueling a wide range of cancers. Elevated levels of insulin and IGF are also the leading candidates to explain a significant correlation in epidemiology that has gained attention over the past 30 years: Obese and diabetic individuals have a far higher risk than lean healthy people of getting cancer, and when they do get it, their risk of dying from it is greater.?

Furthermore, in March,?USA Today reported, ?Although the overall rate of new cancer cases is declining . . . excess weight and a sedentary lifestyle are risk factors for one-quarter to one-third of common cancers in the USA. About one-third of adults?almost 78 million?are obese, roughly 30 or more pounds over a healthy weight."

They go on to quote physician Marcus Plescia, director of the division of cancer prevention for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, who said, "I don't think Americans understand the association between cancer and obesity . . . We do know people are afraid of cancer. They know about the links (from obesity) to diabetes, heart disease and arthritis, but many don't know about this. They need to know."

Consider yourself warned.

What is Floating?
