Speech Therapy For Toddlers

Posted by Mr. Hachis | On: Dec 01 2012

Most kids will speak in their own time. Some start early and some wait until you are sure something is wrong ? only to surprise you with full sentences. All kids are on their own timetable and when they start speaking has very little to do with their mental capacity. Some children do have delays due to things like autism and being born premature. If your child is not speaking as your pediatrician wishes they would, you may be referred to speech therapy for toddlers. This is a good time to take action so that they are all ready for school when the time comes.

Some speech therapy for toddlers is easy. Some kids, like preemies, are expected to catch up with their peers by a certain age, but that does not always happen. This does not mean that anything is wrong. Preemies go through a lot that full-term babies do not have to go through and they have earned the right to take their time. Some therapy can simply be a video or DVD designed to encourage the lip and mouth motions toddlers need to have down to form words. At times, this is all that it takes to get a toddler on the fast track to speech. You can find these online or ask your pediatrician where you can find them.

For bigger issues, a speech therapist may be in order. This is something your pediatrician can and will set up for you if your child needs it, and at times, your insurance will cover the costs. These sessions will vary, but they can help with vowel sounds, the 'th' and 'sh' sounds some children have trouble with, and can also check for mechanical issues that may be effecting speech. If your child has a lisp or other medical issues, speech therapy for toddlers can help diagnose and treat these things. The best part is that your child is young enough to engage without feeling self conscious about their problem.

Hopefully, before your child goes for speech therapy for toddlers, your doctor will first make sure this is not a problem with hearing. A toddler that cannot hear right will not say words right. They may be saying words exactly as they hear them, but if they are not hearing them right, it will sound like gibberish to you. Preemies are often screened very early for this problem, but any child can have hearing problems and speech issues before the problem is diagnosed.

Some parents have luck doing speech therapy for toddlers on their own. They learn about what to do and what works. At times, simply having them go along with a DVD that they like encourages better speech. This is not something that should be done in place of professional help, but it can be tried before speech therapy begins to see if it helps. This type of things can help along with the therapy. Sometimes, a child may just need the proper motivation and they will advance by leaps and bounds.
