Former coach Ostrowski returns to coach Eagles

New Redford Thurston girls basketball coach Bob Ostrowski is bringing an old-school approach to the program.

?I'm a disciplinarian first and a coach second,? Ostrowski said. ?My philosophy is when the girls step into the gym, they're stepping into my class room. I want the girls to have fun, but I want them to have fun while they're learning to become better basketball players. I ask them to give me 125 percent all the time.?

So far, so good, Ostrowski said.

?Their attitude has been great,? he said. ?They seem like they're adapting to my system well. They're very attentive to learning, which will be very beneficial for us.?

This will be Ostrowski's second head-coaching stint at Thurston. A basketball coach since 1970, he coached the Eagles girls squad for six years before moving to Livonia Franklin two years ago. He also coached Dearborn Heights Crestwood's boys team for four years.

Ostrowski said 25 girls tried out for the Eagles varsity, junior varsity and freshman squads.

?We're still looking for some freshmen players,? he added.

He will be assisted by his daughter Ashley and Desmond Smith, who will serve as the junior varsity coach.

Ostrowski has been impressed by his nucleus of returning seniors, including Ariele Paris, Daniell May, Sommer Lemle and Adajaih Pittman.

?Ari can play any position on the floor,? Ostrowski said. ?She can handle the ball, plus she's aggressive and strong. She's probably 5-9 or 5-10, but she plays like she's 6-2.

?Daniell is versatile, too, and can play forward or guard. Her versatility allows us to change things up when we need to.?

Lemle, the tallest Eagle at 6-1, and Pittman, who blossomed during the latter stages of last season, will give Thurston a nice one-two punch in the paint.

?They give us some height under the basket and they'll help us defend in the middle on defense,? Ostrowski said.

Junior Kennedy Taylor can play guard or forward.

?She's very fast and a good shooter,? Ostrowski said.

Junior Charniece Lang will play both shooting guard and small forward.

?She sees the floor very well and handles the ball nicely,? Ostrowski said. ?She's an intelligent basketball player.?

The Eagles will rely on sophomore Braelin Brown's polished back court skills.

?She sees the floor well and she has nice speed,? Ostrowski said. ?Her speed and quickness make her a good defender, too.?

Ostrowski is also looking for consistent contributions from juniors Laurielle Martin, Lanise Ryles, Hannah Cochran and Marybeth Mulliett.

?The girls are really starting to gel,? Ostrowski said. ?Day by day, you can see them starting to learn my offense and defense.?
